A mother was riding through a park with her two young sons when an ordinary family outing suddenly became an emergency.
Her seven-year-old son has cerebral palsy, so his father had adapted a scooter with a larger platform that allowed the boy and his mother to ride together. As they traveled along a wet path, the scooter slipped on a puddle and threw them to the ground. When the mother looked at her son, he was unconscious.
She did not have her phone and began calling desperately for help. The park appeared nearly empty, except for five teenagers gathered beneath a nearby shelter. As soon as they heard her, all five ran through the rain to help.
Each teenager found a way to be useful. One called for an ambulance. Another followed the mother’s frightened five-year-old son so he would not be alone. Two went to the entrance of the park to direct emergency responders to the family. The fifth teenager brought blankets, covered the injured child and stayed beside the mother as she waited for help.
At the hospital, the boy regained consciousness and was found to be unharmed. The mother was left with a lasting memory of five young people who remained calm, recognized what needed to be done and acted without hesitation.
Adult Summary
Five teenagers responded immediately when a mother and her children needed help following a scooter accident. Rather than waiting for someone else to take responsibility, they divided the tasks among themselves, contacted emergency services, protected the younger child, guided the ambulance and comforted the frightened family.
Elf Notes
The teenagers did not have special training, equipment or advance notice that someone would need them. They simply paid attention and used what they had to help.
Kindness is not always quiet or gentle. Sometimes kindness means running toward a difficult situation, remaining calm and taking action when someone else is frightened.
Kindness Takeaway
Pay attention to the people around you.
Do not assume someone else will provide help.
Look for one specific thing you can do.
Remain calm when another person is frightened.
Small actions become powerful when people work together.
